Plus - Kenneth Anger
David Lynch shorts @ [5]art
Suite # 210
1906 N. Armenia
Tampa, Florida 7pm
For this evening the Sleep of
Reason Cinema Series at [5]art in West
Tampa featured a collection of experimental short films mixed with
live soundtrack and performance aspects (the bands played live
soundtracks to their short films). A selection of Kenneth Anger shorts
were meant to be shown first but extenuating circumstances meant that a
selection of David Lynch's earliest shorts were shown in their
place. The evening started off with two (there might have been
more, I only caught the last two) short films by Jeffery Ruble, of
Ruble Enterprises, it was, in one word broken up with dashes,
w-e-i-r-d. Next
up were some short documentaries from local
multi-media artist Kelly Benjamin, the first dealt with the inhabitants
of a modern day shanty-town in Miami, the second was a collection of
interviews with protestors/supporters gathered at the height of the
Terry Shiavo circus. I'd seen the second film before but not the
first., I enjoyed them both. Somehow I ended up next on the
roster, in lieu of showing a completed film I instead decided to try
and show multiple films and visions at once, included were - raw
footage that I shot on a trip to Maine with a self modified black and
white video camera, surveillance films from a local Pawn Shop, visible
audio signals from two modified synths (this part didn't work out too
well) and some "live" shots, I didn't know how the films or the
music would turn out, it made it a little more interesting for me, I
was happy enough when it all was over. Two short films from
Ariana Dominguez were next up, slight technical difficulties meant
these films couldn't be shown in their uninterrupted entirety but that
was OK because sometimes you don't need to see a whole film to know
that it's a winner. Hopefully these films will have another
showing sometime in the near future. Then And Than provided the
live soundtrack to another film by Kelly Benjamin, this was an awesome
experience for me, half of it resulting from the sheer beauty of the
music, the other half was due to what I thought was an incredibly
genius film. Haves& Thirds closed the night out by providing
a live soundtrack to Todd Lynne's short film "Killer in the Woods",
which turned out to be a pre-pubescent horror classic. A better
evening I couldn't have imagined. Thanks go out to [5]art for the
invitation for these bands and individuals to come out, play, and show
their films and to everyone that came out to attend this evening's
event.
"Ages" - Music by Then And Than, Visuals by Smelly Wombat
While Then And
Than originally scored this film live on 12.11.09, it should be noted
that the audio track heard in this particular film was recorded at the
Wombat's lair a few days afterwards.
