Tampa,
Florida.
This
show came about for a couple of reasons, one would be that I
personally can't think of a good reason not to find a way to have all
of these excellent bands play together somewhere so anyone that just
happened to care could come and enjoy what they all do, another reason
would be that it seemed like a good way to get some people together and
then unload some cassettes to whoever ended up hanging in there till
the end of the night, more reasons do exist, and while they're all
important in one way or another they need not be mentioned here.
The lack of a permanent venue to have things like this happen when the
fancy strikes would usually mean that things like this wouldn't happen
at all, but one of the things that I love about the people and bands
that live hereabouts is that they/we find ways to make them
happen. The alternative would be that nothing would happen and
what a crime that would be. Word was passed to gather at the S2HQ
and that word reached enough to people to make this a night that I hope
to always remember. First up, Haves& Thirds, tonight's set
was a visual and audible tribute to a figure who's life and work made a
definite mark on the minds of others, the who isn't as important as the
why. I was sucked into the heart of a massive rip curl, rolled,
spun and raced against the ocean's floor, finally ending washed up upon
a distant shore, a once in a lifetime ride that left me exhilarated and
gasping for my breath. I got to my feet and made my way outside,
a last minute request from Breatheasy to share the love led to a really
incredible set, I'm so glad the request was made. To the best of
my knowledge I'd never had the pleasure of a Breatheasy set before
tonight, I'm actively pulling for more, beautiful things, they really
do happen. Pserpent, each time I've had the opportunity to catch
one of these sets I've been left wondering, wondering what is hard to
say aside from that I've always been left wondering when the next time
is that I'll get another chance to hear one of these progressively
amazing sets. Someone really needs to follow Pserpent around and
press "play/record". Then And Than made their second appearance
at the S2HQ next, screaming like a rocket from a bottle, with a
seemingly never ending amount of thrust, they rise, rise, rise, from
the ground to the skies, breaking free from the pull of the Earth's
gravity and leaving it's atmosphere on what is hopefully a never ending
journey into the deepest reaches of space, time and the minds of those
who join them for the ride, hanging on to the tail end of this flaming
projectile with everything I've got, trying not to loose my grip, these
rides are getting better and better, the farther they reach out, I'll
be holding on as long as they travel on. A super special
first time solo set from T.I.M. (1/3 of Skeleton Warrior for those who
do not know) came up next, I found this set to have it's own truly
unique and natural rhythm, not with a pre-determined path that was
followed by rote but instead by just letting things come and go as they
want and do. Things like this have to happen by themselves,
otherwise they wouldn't turn out to be as rewarding as this set
was.
Poke, prod, cajole, I plan on doing all of these things and more in the
hopes of T.I.M. continuing this solo adventure. Wrapping up the
night were Astrovian Func, outside in the night, the heavens above
shared by clouds and stars, a full on marathon of half wit, half
wisdom, from two parts absurdity, all combined to become a whole, a
whole lot of giggles, guffaws and heartfelt groans. More
skin! This set was somewhat scandalous, can't beat the fact that
you can get something like this without a cover charge or two drink
minimum. During this set I took the opportunity to pass out some
gifts to all of those people who had stayed this far into the night,
each one, gift and person given to, was done in an attempt to thank, to
thank for helping make things like this happen, again and again,
against the odds, for the odds and by the odds. That was a wrap
to this night, truly a night like no other, something I'm pretty sure
all those in attendance would agree with. Over the course of this
evening, in between sets, I'd just like
to let it be known that the music heard was from my long time friend
Kpt. Michigan, the first set of tracks were from Kpt. Michigan's recent
release "10 Self-Modulating Loops Made Whilst Fasting", streaming audio
from this release can be found at MirrorWorldMusic,
the second set of tracks were from a yet unreleased Kpt. Michigan audio
tome entitled "Black Wood", information on that set of recordings
should be forthcoming.
